Swede Taste of Victory for Professional Pettersson PROFESSIONAL RESULTS
Challenge Tour Professional Bjorn Pettersson (Sweden) was crowned Champion for the 2009 Taba Heights International Pro-Am with scintillating golf over the three day event. Pettersson started round one slowly with an even par 72 that included 4 Birdies and 4 bogies.
Day one belonged to Darren Bragg (England) as he returned a stunning 69 points, the product of 3 birdies and no dropped shots, and finished his round with a stunning birdie 3 on the testing last hole. Bragg closed day one with a two-stroke advantage over Nick Mitchell (England), who shot a very steady 71, a round that would have been much better had it not been for a few putts that slipped by the hole.
Pettersson started Day two with a birdie 3 at Hole 1, but failed to fire as he reached the turn on 1 over par 37 to start the back 9 with a birdie at the long par 5 Hole 10. Pettersson then reeled off five straight pars before he stepped it up a gear to finish with three birdies for a closing 2 under par 70. That score was equalled by Sweden’s Henrik Engdahl. Henrik, who arrived in Taba Heights the night before the first round due to flight cancellations, played very consistent golf returning two 9’s of 1 under par 35 to sit primed for a final day charge up the field. However, as in day one, the day belonged to Darren Bragg, who kept up his fine form with the day’s best equalling 70. A closing bogey left a bitter taste in his mouth as he was looking to return a second consecutive 69, this left Bragg sitting atop the leader board by 3 shots with 5 under par from Pettersson. Nick Mitchell shot 73 to remain in contention as Cairo based Henrik Spongh moved into contention with a 1 under par 71.
Day three got under way in perfect scoring conditions and Pettersson set about his task of reeling in overnight leader Bragg, racing to the turn in 3 under par 33. Making another birdie at Hole 10, Pettersson was now on cruise control. A slight misjudgement from the tee on the par 3 Hole 13 saw Bjorn drop his only shot for the day, but this was soon rectified as he picked up the dropped shot immediately at the long par 5 Hole 14. Sitting at 4 under par for the day and 6 under for the tournament, the victory line was in sight.
Further back in the field, the previous day’s Leader Darren Bragg was finding the going a little tough as his hot putter went cold overnight. A disappointing 75 saw him slip back into third place overall, nevertheless an excellent performance from Bragg, who promised to return next year to battle it out for the title.
Sweden’s Henrik Engdahl continued his form from round two as he returned a 1 under par 71 which included an impressive finish of birdies on Holes 16 and 18. Standing on the 16th Tee, Pettersson couldn’t know if 6 under par would be enough for victory. He switched it up a gear to birdie the tricky short par 4 Hole 16. A Par at Hole 17 set him up for a Grand Stand finish as he holed a majestic putt in front of the applauding gallery on Hole 18. This secured him the week’s best 6 under par with 66 points, enough to be crowned Taba Heights International Professional Champion 2009.

Team Cilliers Makes Final Day Charge
AMATEUR RESULTS
The team of Steve Barnett (18 H’cap), Scott McNeill (24 H’cap), Mayor Patel (12 H’cap) and Professional Norman Cilliers were the toast of the event as they raced through the field on the final day to take First Place and be crowned 2009 Team Champions.
A different story closed day one as the team of Peter Mcgilvray (11 H’cap), Steve Formby (17 H’cap), Grant Bennett (20 H’cap) and Professional Henry Law along with the team of Ian Dawes (20 H’cap), Nick Avery (7 H’cap), Tony Retaino (10 H’cap) and professional Darren Bragg set the early pace with an impressive 82 points. Very tough conditions made scoring difficult as players we buffeted by strong winds, resulting in playing times being in excess of 5 hours 20 minutes. This resulted in two teams being unable to complete their rounds as they stood on the 18th Tee in fading light, forcing the decision to resume play the next day at 6am.
Day two began with similar wind conditions; however players made light work of the course as the team of Dawes, Avery, Retaino and Bragg gelled incredibly well to return an 18 under Par total of 90 points. They raced into a 6-point lead with a two round total of 172 Points over the chasing team of Bennett, McNeill, Patel and Cilliers, who returned an also impressive score of 86 Points, leaving them on a total of 166 for two rounds. Moving through the field on day two was the team of Lasse Oquist (5 H’cap), Nisse Oquist (5 H’cap), Ulf Melin (6 H’cap) and Professional Bjorn Pettersson as they improved by one shot returning a second round 82 Points to sit poised with 163 Points.
Day three started early in the cool sunshine at 06.25 to ensure play was completed if weather conditions proved deteriorated. Play was far from cool as the early teams raced out of the blocks picking up birdies for fun. Second round leaders Dawes, Avery, Retaino and Bragg found the going a little tough as they could not get the ball to drop as it had over the first two days and they started to fall back to the chasing pack. An inspired finish to the round saw them claim Third Place overall with a still impressive three round total of 246 Points (30 under Par). The Swedish team of Oquist, Melin, Oquist and Pettersson continued day three where they left off on day two as they produced birdie after birdie, shooting 84 Points to secure Second Place with an overall total of 247 points (31 under Par).
The day and the tournament belonged to Barnett, McNeill, Patel and Cilliers as they scored a final day’s best round of 86 Points to claim victory and be crowned 2009 Team Champions with a tournament record score of 253 Points, an incredible 36 under Par.
